Speed of traffic through the village 3 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 0
I am recently new to Stoke, well Jan 2009 and have noticed that the speed people enter our village is scary. I am sure things have been done about tis in the past but I felt I should bring it up here to see if there is anything else we can do.

I have written to the council who advised I speak to the police and parish council. The police to see if they want to do speed checks and the council to get involved with flashing speed signs - which I recall was installed for a couple of weeks back last year.

I live off Burgess Hill and notice that most motorists slow as the get more into the village. My neighbour lost her cat the other day and I know of others that have lost cats from speeding cars. It is such a shame that people speed down from the quarry as it does make walking or riding out of the village dangerous, not to mention the worry of another cat getting run over.

If there is anything we can be doing I would be interested to know if I can help. I appreciate that there are bigger things going on with Cookswood at the moment, but maybe this could tie in somehow.

Thanks

Welcome to Stoke St Michael

I am a Parish Coucil and the village are trying to something about it as outline in the Parish Plan, on this web site. We have won money for the speed visor, all be it periodically. And we are pushing for traffic control as part of the Cookswood development. There is little that the PC can do but come along this Thuresday to voice your concern at the PC meeting held at the Memorial Hall at 7.30pm. It is Somerset County Council that have responsibility for highways and the police for speeding - and they do little. There may be a community speed watch if there are enough helpers.

Traffic is the responsibility of Somerset County Council. SSC are aware of the need for traffic control as the speed visor surveys have proved that traffic speed through the village at excessive speed. However, SCC are not prepared to fund a traffic calming scheme unless residents complain. So please contact your County Councillor, Gloria Cawood on telephone 01749 880404. Email: GMCawood@somerset.gov.uk. Address: The Gardeners Cottage, East Cranmore, Somerset BA4 4SG.
