There are real advantages in registering, it isn't such a big deal!
- An important part of the site is the discussion forum, and allowing only registered users to post messages will help to protect the site.
- The same applies to posting files/documents for download e.g. meeting minutes.
- The site is updated by a number of people, not restricted to one or two. We can not have a complete "anybody can post anything" policy because that would be uncontrollable. Different access/editing privileges are granted to registered users.
- The user profile pages will be expanded in future to request MORE detail e.g. postcode. This will enable us, for example, to identify village residents and non-residents, which will be relevant when considering any consultation responses.
Importantly, there's no suggestion that the site user database will be passed-on to any 3rd parties, or used for anything outside the running of the site. 
Non-registered users can still read the news & diary sections, which will contain most of the important content.
